Marseille soap: Which soap is best for which use?

Marseille soap has a place everywhere in the home: in the shower, in the washing machine, and in the cleaning bucket. To help you choose, we’ve organized our soaps and cleaning products by use: for the body, laundry, and the home.

Marseille Body Soap

For bathing and handwashing, choose a bar of Marseille soap: green soap made with olive oil or white soap made with vegetable oils. The 300-gram or 600-gram bar remains the classic choice; the 100-gram bar fits comfortably in your hand and slips easily into a toiletry bag.

Looking for a gift idea? The Marseille Soap gift set and the trio of white soap bars are always a hit.

Marseille soap for laundry

Before washing, rub the stain with a Marseille soap stain remover: soap made with soapnuts for everyday stains, Sommières clay for all types of stains, or baking soda for white laundry. For stubborn stains on fabrics, consider using an ox gall stain remover.

To make your own laundry detergent, grate a bar of plant-based Marseille soap (the white kind). Prefer something ready-to-use? Our liquid laundry detergents are available for whites, darks, and delicates.

Marseille soap for the home

Floors, countertops, dishes: Marseille soap and black soap are the staples of a simple cleaning routine. Dilute liquid black soap in a bucket of hot water for floors, keep a multipurpose spray handy for surfaces, and use a special stainless steel spray for appliances.

For dishes, choose vinegar-based dish soap or its solid version, white vinegar soap. And for tough jobs, the 2-kg bar of Marseille soap can be cut to size as needed.

How to Choose the Right Marseille Soap

Green soap or white soap?

Green Marseille soap is made from olive oil; white Marseille soap, known as “vegetable” soap, is made from other vegetable oils. Both are used for personal hygiene. White Marseille soap is most commonly used for laundry and homemade laundry detergent.

Which format should I choose?

The 100-gram bar of soap and the soap slice are convenient for everyday use. The 300-gram or 600-gram cube lasts longer. The 2-kilogram bar can be cut to size as needed, for both personal use and household cleaning.
