How to recognize real Marseille soap?

Marseille Soap certified by the Union des Professionnels du Savon de Marseille meets several strict criteria:

Maximum of 4 ingredients

At least 72% vegetable oils: This is the basis of the soap and the unique effectiveness for which it is renowned worldwide. These oils are mainly olive or copra pomace oil.

Natural soda: Extracted from sea salt, soda triggers the saponification process of oils when heated with the rest of the ingredients.

Water: To complete the soap base, but also to wash the soap at the end of the manufacturing process.

Sea salt: Cleans soap paste of impurities, restoring its "Extra Pure" quality.

The Marseilles manufacturing process in 5 steps

A unique process involving two phases of cooking the ingredients in a cauldron, followed by several washes to make the soap smooth and pure. Marseille soap is said to be hot-saponified, and this (along with its formula) is what gives it its unique characteristics.

The place of manufacture

To be certified, the soap must have been made in Bouches-du-Rhône (13). This corresponds to its original manufacturing origins and the cradle of its invention.
